The Fort Frances Muskies boys’ hockey team has officially been eliminated from playoff contention at the all-Ontario high school hockey championships, while the girls’ team cling to some hope of moving on.
The boys’ team lost 6-3 to the Holy Trinity Titans from Courtice on Tuesday afternoon.
They lost their morning game 4-1 to Renfrew’s St. Joseph’s Warriors.
The Muskies fell behind early and trailed 5-0 before Jackson Tucker scored with less than a minute left in the second period.
Ashton Armstrong and Callum McCormick added goals in the middle of the third before the Titans added an insurance marker with about 4 minutes remaining.
The girls’ team lost a heartbreaker in their second game of the championships, 2-1 to the Napanee Golden Hawks.
The game-winning goal came with 1:18 remaining in the third period.
The Muskies opened the scoring on a powerplay marker from Avery Sinclair.
The Hawks tied it up with a powerplay goal of their own in the second.
The girls are 0-2 in their pool after a morning loss to the St. Michael Warriors of Stratford.
Two other teams are ahead of them at 1-1, including Simco Composite School, whom the Muskies play Wednesday morning.
A victory is needed for any chance of Fort Frances advancing to the playoff round.
The top two teams in each of the four pools advance.
The boys’ team will wrap up their competition with a game against the East Northumberland Blue Dragons from Brighton at 9 a.m. Central time.
