A petition calls for the Town of Fort Frances to remove American flags from town-owned facilities.
The petition has been on change.org since the beginning of March and comes amidst continued remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding trade tariffs and Canada’s sovereignty.
It asks the town to remove the American flags and replace them with that of Ukraine.
In a letter to council, former councillor Doug Judson says it sends a message to the American people regarding Trump’s behaviour while showing support for victims of the Russian aggression in Ukraine.
“It is incumbent on all of us – and certainly on leaders at all levels of government – to do their part to stand up for Canadian interests, and against the thugs at the Kremlin and the White House,” writes Judson.
“We should no longer take for granted the placement of flags anymore than we would financial decisions to support Canadian business,” he adds.
More than 160 people have signed the petition.
Most are residents from the Fort Frances area, but there are also signatures from people elsewhere in Canada.
A handful of U.S. residents from Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and North Carolina also show their support for the show of protest.
The petition comes to council on Monday for discussion.
Other Ontario cities, including Barrie and Mississauga, have already taken similar action and removed American flags from their facilities.
