A proposal to crack down on scam artists.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is unveiling a series of measures to protect victims, especially seniors.
It includes new legislation impacting banks and cellphone providers.
“We’re going to pass the Stop Scamming Seniors Act, a common sense law that forces banks and telecom companies to deploy state-of-the-art technology to catch scams and stop them before they happen,” says Poilievre.
“We will mandate real-time scam detection systems by banks and telecoms starting with seniors accounts.”
Poilievre says they will require automatic flagging and blocking of suspicious activity and a 24-hour hold on a high-risk transaction for seniors and anyone who requests the extra protection.
Poilievre says there will also be strong sentences and fines intended to cripple fraudsters.
“We will impose mandatory jail time of one year for $5,000 of fraud, 3 years for a fraud of over $100,000, five years for fraud over one million and minimum fines that are 10 times the size of the frauds committed.”
Liberal leader Mark Carney proposes new training aimed at workers in the midst of their careers.
Carney says to build the economy, a skilled workforce should have access to training and education at all times.
“My government will launch a new sector-specific mid-career training and upskilling benefit in priority sectors; manufacturing, construction, tech and artificial intelligence,” says Carney.
“This approach will support Canadians in the middle of their careers who need access to skills training within established areas of critical need for our economy.”
Carney says eligible workers will have access to up to $15,000.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh continues to push back on what he says is Carney’s plan to make cuts.
He also continues to argue for voters electing a minority government.
“If you want someone that’s going to fight for you and your family, you got to vote for New Democrats,” says Singh.
“New Democrats are committed to fighting for you and your family, are committed to a tax system that is more fair.”
The federal election takes place on April 28th.
