More support from the provincial government for skilled trades training.
A total of $3.5 million will go toward programs that help young people gain employment in the construction industry.
Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development Minister Monte McNaughton says about two thousand young people will benefit.
“Including hands-on training that allows students to explore these lucrative careers, meet industry mentors and develop essential skills,” says McNaughton.
These projects are led by the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario.
McNaughton says the job demand is currently strong.
There are 350,000 jobs in Ontario going unfilled, while one in five job openings is projected to be in the skilled trades by 2025.
“In construction alone, Ontario will need more than 100,000 workers this decade to build 1.5 million homes by 2031,” says McNaughton.
Ontario is also expanding the eligibility of the Skills Development Fund to include more training that targets high-school and postsecondary students.
Ontario’s Skills Development Fund is supported through labour market transfer agreements between the governments of Canada and Ontario.
