Voyageurs National Park plans to burn off invasive hybrid cattail stands this winter.
Prescribed burns are scheduled in the coming weeks on selected wetlands on Rainy and Kabetogama Lakes.
Officials say this reduces the material that is mechanically removed in summer.
The burn operations will be done during daytime hours in and near Black Bay, Dove Bay, Cranberry Bay, and Alder Creek on Rainy Lake and Tom Cod, Irwin, Bowman, and Daley Bays on Kabetogama Lake.
Hybrid cattails are seen as a hindrance to native plants like wild rice, rushes and native cattails.
Park officials say hybrid cattails have invaded approximately 200 hectares of wetlands in Voyageurs.
