The Rainy River District School Board is adding a third student trustee to its board table.
This youth will represent the interests of the area’s Indigenous students.
A student to fill the position will be selected during the next school year.
Education Director Heather Campbell says the proposal was shared with the board’s Student Senate and the First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Education
Advisory Committee in February, with both advisory committees showing their support for the addition of another student.
The board has had student trustees since legislative changes permitted their appointments in 2007.
Student trustees provide a youth perspective to the decision-making although do not have the powers to move or vote on motions.
The Rainy River Board becomes the 20th in Ontario to have an Indigenous youth trustee.
