Plans for a new customs facility in International Falls will include the latest in energy-efficient technologies.
The U.S. government is earmarking $86 million toward using things like heat recovery systems, wind power and glass that controls the amount of light passing through.
The funding is through the Inflation Reduction Act and will allow 38 federal improvement projects to utilize clean construction materials and state-of-the-art sustainable technologies.
Twenty-three of these projects will fully electrify standard building operations and eliminate on-site greenhouse emissions, helping the government’s goal of having all of its federal sites achieve net zero emissions by 2030.
The customs facility project in International Falls is still in the design phase.
Final approval is expected this spring, with construction to begin next year.
It will replace existing facilities that have become outdated.
The new one is to located to the east on about 20 acres of land situated next to the Rainy River.
Construction costs are budgeted to be between $200 and $250 million.
