The early announcement of expanded beer and wine sales is fueling speculation about an early election in Ontario.
The Premier sidestepped several questions from reporters when asked if the move was leading to an early election.
“We have a long agenda that we’re fulfilling. The promises, promises made, promises kept. We’re getting it done for the people of Ontario,” says Doug Ford.
The next election is scheduled for June 2026.
The government had previously indicated plans to have convenience stores and more grocery and big box stores selling beer and wine in the same year.
Ford still refused when asked to confirm even the election date.
“Well, again, I just want to get our agenda through. I want to continue building Ontario, creating more jobs that we never saw.”
The PCs remain strong in public opinion polls, and are coming off two by-election wins in southern Ontario ridings.
Both ridings were previously held by PC cabinet ministers, Parm Gill, who stepped down in February, and Monte McNaughton, who left last September.
