A Thunder Bay firm has been selected to replace an aging pedestrian bridge in Atikokan.
Town council awarded the contract to replace the bridge at Maple Crescent to Pete’s Backhoe Service.
The all-steel bridge will cost the town just over $233,000.
Public Works Director Tyler Dziarmaga says the contractor says they should be able to have the bridge on site within a month.
“They’ll be getting it pre-manufactured by a large-scale bridge manufacturer. That’s all that they do, is build bridges. So they hammer them out pretty quick,” says Dziarmaga.
He adds the material to be used is a bit more robust than painted steel, allowing for an extended lifespan.
Council earlier this year agreed to have bridges at Maple Crescent and Main Street removed after a report identified both were in a severe states of deterioration.
Both were closed to the public at the beginning of June.
Dziarmaga says the abutments of both bridges are staying in place for the use of new ones.
“We’re keeping the abutments because they’re still in good shape. We’re just putting a new bridge on top of them.”
The town has not said when the bridge at Main Street will be replaced.
