The president of New Gold says the company mourns together the loss of a worker at its Rainy River mine.
Patrick Godin used a quarterly conference call to address last week’s incident.
45-year-old Jeffrey Woolsey was killed after being struck by material while he was working in the open pit.
Godin says safety is a priority.
“Every quarterly call, I start by talking about safety. I talk about our courage to care culture. I do this because I believe the key to consistent and disciplined production starts with safe production,” says Godin.
“It starts with the courage to care for our colleagues looking out for one another, stopping work if it’s not safe, and ensuring everyone goes home to their family and friends safely at the end of every shift.”
Godin adds that he is proud of the health and safety performance at their mines and the commitment of all employees.
“We have been able to celebrate the awards and milestones together. But in this instance, we mourn together with the family, friends and colleagues who have been impacted by this tragic incident.”
Funeral services for Woolsey are taking place Friday at Barwick Hall.
New Gold is shutting operations down to allow workers to attend.
