Several agencies are coming together to host a colour run.
The Dagwaagin Colour Run to take place on September 5th along the LaVerendrye Parkway.
The Gizhewaadiziwiin Health Access Centre, Giishkaandago’Ikwe Health Services, NorthwesterUnit and the United Native Friendship Centre, along with other community organizations, are involved in the planning.
Ginny Hielman, Manager of Social Emergencies at Giishkaandago’Ikwe Health Services says it is an opportunity for people of all ages to give one last hurrah to summer and kick off the fall season in a fun and colourful way.
“Dagwaagin is an Ojibwe word which means autumn or fall, and it’s chosen to represent the time of year that the colour run is taking place,” says Hielman.
“A colour run is a fun event where participants are showered with coloured powder at various points throughout the course, that’s thrown at them or sprayed at them by the volunteers. This run is non-competitive, and it emphasizes fun over speed, making it accessible to all ages and fitness levels.”
There will be two lengths offered to participants to either walk or run – one kilometre and five kilometres.
The event will start and end at the Sorting Gap Marina.
Participants will receive a gift bag and a white T-shirt to wear during the event.
Runners and walkers are being encouraged to wear leggings, tutus, and other colourful attire.
There will also be an opportunity to take photos after the event, a cleanup station to blow off some of the colours before people get back in their vehicles when they’re done and a prize giveaway.
“We thought that it sounded like a really fun opportunity to try something new in our community. We’ve since collaborated with multiple community partners and organizations in the Fort Frances area, and we’ve all come together to try to make this a success this year,” says Hielman.
Heilman says they would like those interested in taking part to register before August 15th.
