The Fort Frances Muskies football team is dedicating their year’s season in the Winnipeg High School Football League in honour of a long-time coach.
Dave Montgomery passed away suddenly last November.
Montgomery coached the Muskies for several years, guiding the team to a NWOSSA championship in 1989.
That squad was inducted into the Fort Frances Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
Coach “Monty,” as he was commonly referred to, was also instrumental in forming the Touchdown Club in response to funding cuts by the school board.
The Touchdown Club has since renamed in his honour an annual bursary given to a graduating high school football player pursuing post-secondary education.
This year, players will wear decals on their helmets all season to remember Montgomery.
Family members will also take part in a special coin-tossing ceremony prior to the start of this afternoon’s season opener against John Taylor Collegiate from Winnipeg.
The game takes place at Muskies Field beginning at 3 p.m., with the pre-game ceremony starting at about 2:50 p.m.
