A group assisting with people in recovery will get a $500 donation from Fort Frances town council.
The group sought a donation for the use of the auditorium at the Memorial Sports Centre for an upcoming event.
Councillor Mike Behan was supportive but expressed concern about such requests.
“Because you do it for one group, you have to do it for everybody,” says Behan.
“The idea is to raise money for renting out our facilities. Regardless of how great the cause is, we have to be conscious of that.”
The donation is almost equal to the rental cost of the auditorium.
Councilor Mandi Olson felt it was a worthy event to support, noting the conference will include guest speakers from the immediate area.
“So not only are we contributing to the actual request, but our community members that have battled their own issues with addictions will be speaking at this event,” says Olson.
“There’s over a dozen locals that have battled opioid addiction, amphetamines, alcoholism, or concurrent disorders, along with mental health. It really is a beautiful initiative.”
Participants will pay a fee to take part.
As of Thursday morning, over 40 people registered.
Similar events are also happening in Kenora and Thunder Bay.
