The Rainy River District School Board has started the process of selecting a name for the new K-12 school in Rainy River.
A committee has been formed that will help gather public input and make a recommendation to the board.
It will include administration, staff from the community’s two schools, student representation and members from the community.
Seats are also being set aside for representatives from the area’s First Nations communities.
Under its terms of reference, the committee is being asked to provide a list of 2 to 5 potential names for the board to consider.
The final decision will be made by the Board of Trustees.
The area’s history, geography, and demographics are to be considered.
The board wants any proposed name to reflect a positive image for the new school and the Rainy River District School Board.
The names of any historical person are to be avoided, if possible.
The board hopes to have a name in place by the end of the year, with final approval coming early in the new year.
The new school is scheduled to open in September 2025 and will bring together students now in classes at Rainy River High School and Riverview School.
