The newest family to Fort Frances is now settled into their new surroundings.
Rami Canoon, his wife Fivyan Shamoon and their two young girls Fbaana and Oryana, arrived last week from Lebanon where they had escaped to from ISIS-controlled Mosul in Iraq several years ago.
Rami says living in Iraq was just not safe for his family, so they fled to Turkey with very few belongings.
They lived in that country for about a year, but relocating to Lebanon because of a lack of work and the language barrier.
Rami says it was his sister Julia Al-Zeebaree who suggested to him about coming to Canada.
At the time he called it a dream, but he’s now very very happy his family is starting a new life in Fort Frances and Canada.
“I thank God to saving me,” says Rami, “and thank the government of Canada for accepting them to come to Canada. Especially thanks to Mrs. Kathy (Kathy Mueller with group Families for Families). I am very happy in Canada.”
“I don’t worry about the weather the cold or snow. Here is better. No wars, no battles and nice people here.”
Their oldest daughter is expected to start school next week.
The Canoon family is being supported by the local group Families For Families.
They’re also supporting the Al-Zeebaree family who arrived in Fort Frances earlier last month.
