Ontario’s Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry says it’s not in his authority to urge companies like Resolute Forest Products to make a deal for its Fort Frances mill.
John Yakabuski says he would still like to see the mill operate into the future.
“You know, if there is a deal on the mill or any other mill, we are going to work with the buyers to develop a strategy to ensure there is access to the fiber for that mill. But we have to work with the allotments that exist out there today,” says Yakabuski.
The minister notes his ministry can only step in once the mill’s purchase has been completed.
“At that time, we would readdress that situation. We can not inject ourselves into the negotiations in order to effect the sale of that asset,” says Yakabuski.
