The Northwestern Health Unit says it was surprised by an announcement by the Ford Government in the 2019 budget to reduce the number of health units in the province.
The government plans to go from the current 35 to 10.
Chief Executive Officer Marilyn Herbacz says there are no concrete numbers for them so it’s hard to tell what the current effects will be.
“We will need some financial information so we know what our budgets are going to look like going forward, what kind of time lines. None of this has been communicated to us yet,” says Herbacz.
Herbacz says they don’t if part of the plan includes a merger of health units.
She says they are already a lean organization.
“We are looking and hoping that all of our services and staff can be maintained through this process.”
Herbacz expects more details in the coming weeks.
