Some encouragement for students to continue reading and writing from an award-winning Canadian author.
Sigmund Brouwer is visiting schools in the Rainy River District as part of Education Week and made a stop to Robert Moore School in Fort Frances yesterday.
Brouwer promotes the importance of story with students.
“To me, story is a huge reason for reading and writing. And if we can get that message to our kids,’ Hey, you can have fun with story and then use writing to deliver it or reading to get stories,’ that’s my small role in this huge, huge thing the teachers are doing for kids,” says Brouwer.
He says students can even use their own experiences to come up with stories.
“Humans connect with story. So when we ask students to share their own stories it gives them a little extra motivation to use the writing tools that their teachers are providing them.”
Brouwer adds it’s also important to acknowledge the role teachers are doing in the classroom to help students.
“Especially during education week we need to acknowledge how much work our teachers do. I mean they care about the kids. They’re doing a lot of work. They’re providing the students with awesome writing tools for their future. And then I might be that last little piece of the puzzle where I can help the teachers inspire the kids.”
