Pride Week is returning to the Borderland region.
Borderland Pride has released a schedule of events kicking off June 2-9.
Co-chair Doug Judson says they’ve branded the week as Pride Week plus.
“We have, I think, around seventeen or eighteen events and initiatives that cover a seventeen day span. We’ve got things a touch three different communities and other over a dozen event partners for the entire week that are helping us to put that on,” says Judson.
Judson says there are events covering everything from social and educational opportunities to events to express oneself.
“It’s a full slate of activities directed towards allowing members of the community to show their support for LGBTQ2 people, especially LGBTQ2 young people, but also to put our best foot forward and show that we are a welcoming inclusive community for everyone,” says Judson.
The event was moved to June to coincide with Pride Month and to include more school participation.
As a result, the Rainy River District School Board, along with Egale Canada Human Rights Trust will be offering a workshop on how to support LGBTQ2 young people.
A cross-border march between International Falls and Fort Frances will take place again. A second Pride March is also planned to take place in the town of Rainy River the week before. That event is being organized by the Northwestern Health Unit.
“We’re trying to grow this every year. We’re still in our infancy in many ways. You’re seeing a bit of the old but a bit of some trying new approaches and trying a few new events a lot of that’s based on public feedback some this just based on the creativity that of the event partners.”
