A State of Emergency has been declared in Pikangikum First Nation due to a nearby forest fire.
Chief Mandi Chan-Peters confirms on Facebook that community evacuations will begin this morning.
She says medically compromised individuals, prenatals, and infants born in 2018-2019 will be first priority.
The Chief says a Hercules aircraft will be relocating residents to Kapuskasing.
Concern was raised when the fire skipped over the Berens River.
Chan-Peters says is now burning 3-kilometres from Taxi Bay.
Meantime, warmer weather is moving up the forest fire hazard.
It’s now into the high level for much of northwestern Ontario.
Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry fire crews responded to five new fires yesterday.
