Hard work from fire crews in Pikangikum is paying off.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reports a forest fire burning to the east of the remote community has been significantly reduced in size to approximately 3320 hectares,
It had been initially mapped at 4,000 hectares.
Two CL-415 waterbombers and about a dozen MNRF fire rangers on the ground focused their attention on the western edge of the fire yesterday to prevent it from advancing towards the community.
It’s now burning about 2.5 kilometres from the community’s airport.
A state of emergency was declared two days ago prompting residents to be flown to Kapaskasing and Thunder Bay.
The fire is still listed as not under control.
