Pride Week is officially underway.
Fort Frances Councillor Doug Judson, who is also co-chair of Borderland Pride, was joined Monday morning by Mayor June Caul and other town staff to raise a flag raising in recognition.
“It’s a great symbolic start to the week. It shows that our civic leadership is engaged and are on message for the idea that we need to show ourselves as a welcoming place for young people but also for people that may want to move here start businesses are or invest in our community,” says Judson.
There are events all this week, culminating with a march across the border Saturday between International Falls and Fort Frances.
“It starts at 10 a.m. at Smokey Bear Park in International Falls that will cross the border to Rainy Lake Square in Fort Frances where there will be some entertainment, some speeches and a free community barbecue,” says Judson.
There are other events taking part throughout the week.
And while the week is about celebrating the area’s LGTBQ2S community, it’s also about educating others about who they are and why Pride is important.
“You see that reflected in some of the events we have to is that they’re not just celebratory. Some of them are fun events but a lot of them have an educational or public awareness component built into them.”
All events are open to everyone.
