A new tax to help pay for infrastructure projects in International Falls could be in place October 1.
City council this week completed first reading of an ordinance necessary for the 1 per cent tax to take effect.
Administrator Ken Anderson says second reading will take place June 24.
“And the need for that would be is to try and get this filed with the Commissioner of Revenue before the end of June so we can start collecting the sales tax,” says Anderson.
They will also send it off to the Secretary of State.
The city has also identified $110-million worth of projects the tax could be applied to over the next thirty years.
Mayor Bob Anderson says they’ll be meeting in the neaer future to identify the priority projects. He says not all of them will get done with use of the tax dollars to be generated.
Once implemented, the tax can only be in place for 30 years or until $30-million dollars is collected, whichever comes first.
