The West Nile virus is showing up in dead loons in Minnesota.
Lab tests at the University of Minnesota confirm the presence of the virus in two birds found in northeastern Minnesota earlier this month.
The Department of Natural Resources says it’ also noticed an increase in calls from people finding other dead loons in that part of the state this year.
It’s now asking residents if they find two or more dead loons on a single lake to contact them.
West Nile was first identified in Minnesota in 2002 and determined to be a cause of dead loons three years later.
