The Trudeau government is formalizing its commitment to a power project in Ontario’s Far North.
Federal Indigenous Relations Minister Seamus O’Regan formally sign an agreement with Wataynikaneyap Power during a visit to Fort William First Nation on Monday.
The $1.6 billion Indigenous power project is designed to bring electricity to remote First Nation communities.
The project will allow these communities to get off diesel generators.
“At the end of the day we are going to hook up 14 communities to the Ontario power grid, and that’s huge,” says O’Regan.
The project is being jointly funded by the federal and Ontario governments.
Wataynikaneyap Power CEO Margaret Kenequanash says it was important to have the paperwork completed on the project so the financing model can be finalized.
