Correctional officers in Fort Frances are drawing attention to the need for improvements to the jail in the community.
They say there are both interior and exterior upgrades required
One of the things is a body scanner.
It allows officers to detect anything illegal that may be coming into the facility. Ontario Public Services Employees Union Local 718 president Tom Kenny says the Fort Frances jail is the only one in the province without one.
“We’ve been waiting patiently for word on that. It’s just taking a bit too long as far as we’re all concerned,” says Kenny.
Kenny says they did get a chance a voice their concerns to Solicitor General Sylvia Jones when she was in Fort Frances last month.
“We were able to sit down with her and have a good chat on the state of our facility, amongst other things. It was a good visit,” says Kenny.
No commitments were made by the Minister.
Meantime, Fort Frances town council is expected to also see first hand what officers are talking about.
In a post on Twitter, Councillor Doug Judson says he’s been in touch with Kenny and arranged for a future tour of the facility.
