Minnesota’ Governor calling for renewed talks into gun control in his state.
Tim Walz comments come in response to recent mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas.
“I understand the culture that goes behind people wanting to exercise our second amendment rights but I also understand very clearly that there’s absolutely no reason some these weapons need to be in the hands of folks on the street,” says Walz.
An expansion of background checks and the introduction of so-called ‘Red Flag’ laws which allow law enforcement to take firearms from people identified as a danger to themselves or others have been proposed in the past, but have failed to get through the legislature.
Walz places the blame on the Republican Senate, he calls an Island of Resistance, in moving legislation forward.
“They keep talking about that this is complex we need to get the root of it and every single one of them stopped research into it. Every single one of them wouldn’t let the CDC do this and every single one of them stopped hearings.”
Walz looks to others Republican-led states that have passed similar laws.
