It’s no question that hockey is seen as Canada’s sport. During the summer months, Canadian kids adapt to the warm weather and trade in their skates and pucks for shoes and balls for a game of ‘road hockey.’
But recently, there’s been a decline in road hockey.
A survey by the Esso, a long-time hockey supporter, reveals that while 88 per cent of Canadian parents feel road hockey is an important Canadian tradition, only 33 per cent of children who play hockey play road hockey.
Some key reasons behind this decline include children having no one to play with and difficulty playing where they reside. Increased traffic volumes and speeding are also identified as parent’s safety concerns through this survey.
Being aware of local road hockey bylaws and regulations is important as they vary.
Susan Di Giorgio from the Esso says “It’s important to be diligent when driving in residential areas and watch out for children playing road hockey.”
