The United Native Friendship Centre has broken ground on a new childcare facility.
The over $3-million facility is being constructed on McIrvine Road in Fort Frances.
It’s expected to open its doors sometime in December 2020.
Executive Director Sheila McMahon says the project has been in the planning for a long time.
“We’ve been planning this for over 4 years even prior to any funding approvals it’s always been a dream of the friendship center to bring our family programs under one roof,” says McMahon.
McMahon says the new facility will enhance existing services and offer culturally appropriate care to Indigenous families and their children.
“We’ll have an in-house language revitalization program, the cultural program that will actually be based within the centre.”
The new will have space for 24 pre-school children, 15 toddlers, and 10 infants.
