The NDP federal election candidate for Thunder Bay-Rainy River is weighing in on the restrictions placed on the future uses of the former Resolute Forest Products mill in Fort Frances.
Yuk-Sem Won feels the federal government should intervene.
Won also throws the blame on the Liberal government for failing to support northern Ontario, leaving people in the region to fight on their own.
The town of Fort Frances says conditions on the recent sale of the mill restrict any ability to restart the mill and access wood from the Crossroute Forest.
Meanwhile, the federal Liberal candidate takes the view similar to Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford.
Marcus Powlowski believes Resolute Forest Products should be able to have restrictions on the sale of its Fort Frances property if it wishes.
“These restrictions are part of a business agreement between Resolute and the new buyer. The issue is really, I think, about access to the Crossroute Forest and the changes that are in the works regarding how forest management licenses work,” Powlowski.
He doesn’t see any reason for the federal government to get involved.
Thunder Bay-Rainy River federal Conservative candidate Linda Rydholm has not yet commented on the issue.
