Members of Fort Frances met with Natural Resources Minister John Yakabuski and Northern Development, Mines & Energy Minister Greg Rickford in Ottawa Aug. 20, 2019
Mayor June Caul is hopeful after meeting with Natural Resources Minister John Yakabuski over their concerns with the conditions attached to the recent sale of the mill in Fort Frances.
It was during that meeting that the town asked for a hold on the new Enhanced Sustainable Forest Licence system.
Caul says if it goes through anyone with wood rights gets to keep that wood.
“Our concern is, if that happens, Resolute would get to keep the wood that supposed to come from the Crossroute Forest to Fort Frances and we’re dead in the water as far as that goes,” says Caul.
Northern Development Minister Greg Rickford was also at last week’s meeting.
Caul credits Rickford for getting that meeting with Yakabuski in Ottawa.
“He actually was at the meeting with us sitting on our side of the table helping us to plead our case about trying to get something done here.”
Rickford and Yakabuski were to meet again and report back to the town in the near future.
Caul says until they hear back, they’ll continue to review what other options they have in getting the mill restarted.
