The mayor of Fort Frances is calling the Fort Frances jail deplorable.
The mayor along with other members of council toured the facility prior to attending the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference in Ottawa.
She says it was the first time she’d ever been there.
“It is way beyond ridiculous the conditions that people have to work in and also the conditions for inmates. It’s terrible. There’s no other word to describe it, says Caul.
Caul says the 107-year-old building is showing its age. She maybe it’s time for a new facility.
“The staff is so good there and they just do the best with what they’ve got. They really need they need a new building. You can’t even refurbish that jail with the way it is built.”
Caul took her findings to Solicitor General Sylvia Jones last week in a push for improvements. One of the ideas offered was using the current OPP detachment when officers relocated to new facilities next fall.
“Maybe they can use that for, I don’t know, whether it be office rooms. There is even the talk of possibly moving the women cells over.”
Jones herself had toured the building during her visit to Fort Frances in June.
No commitments have been made at this time.
