The provincial government is moving ahead with mandatory math tests for new teachers.
They’ll need at least a 70 per cent score to pass.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says they simply want to ensure help educators succeed at what they do.
I think that’s not a comment on their craft, on their skills. It’s more of comment as a government culturally that we want to continuously improve who we have in front of our kids,” says Lecce.
The agency now responsible for administering math and literacy tests to students has been asked to come up with the test for teachers.
Lecce defends its need.
“We want to see greater capacities of all educators in the province and we believe that test will help us understand where are the challenges and conversely where to allocate more support for professional development.
Lecce says there will be a protocol to follow if teachers fail the test on their first try.
