The town of Fort Frances continues to seek out the protection of wood in hopes a potential operator can restart the idled mill.
Speaking to the town’s economic development advisory committee on Monday, Mayor June Caul says they continue to work with Northern Development and Mines Minister Greg Rickford to get something done.
The town wants to ensure wood that had previously been earmarked for the Fort Frances mill is there is the mill ever reopens.
Town officials have also pressed their case with Natural Resources Minister John Yakabuski and Ministry staff.
Caul says while those discussions have been positive, she’s not yet to be 100 per cent guaranteed any will happen.
“We feel like it is but unless I see it in writing, I don’t want to take the chance to say yes we,” says Caul.
Caul says there are still interested companies wanting to take over the mill. It’s why the issue has been at the top of the agenda for council.
“We’ve been battling this issue for the last 9 months and we will continue to advocate for the Fort Frances mill, our economy, and our social well-being of the citizens of all communities in our district.”
Rickford and Yakabuski were to have further meetings on the issue but Caul says she hasn’t been told if they’ve taken place or if there had been any outcome.
