An emotional response from Canada’s NDP leader to pictures of liberal leader Justin Trudeau wearing black make up at a party in 2001.
With many people calling it racist, Jagmeet Singh says the image jarred him.
“I’ve faced a lot of racism in my life, and I can be honest with you, I fought back with my fist. But there’s a lot of people that weren’t able to do that. But people that see this image are going to think of all those times in their life when they were made fun of,” says Singh.
The NDP leader adds he wasn’t sure if he wanted to make a statement last night but was encouraged by a friend to do so.
Canada’s Conservative leader Andrew Scheer is wasting no time in going after the Liberal leader, calling it an act of open mockery and racism.
“It was just as racist in 2001 as it is in 2019. And what Canadians saw this evening was someone with a complete lack of judgment and integrity and someone who’s not fit to govern this country,” says Scheer
Justin Trudeau has repeatedly apologized, calling it racist and a dumb thing he did back then.
Reporters asked if he’d resign considering many other politicians would be asked the same thing if caught in a similar position.
“I take responsibility for my decision to do that, I shouldn’t have done it, I should’ve known better. It was something that I didn’t think was racist at the time, but now I recognize it was something racist to do.”
Peoples’ Party leader Maxime Bernier tweeted Trudeau isn’t a racist, but the biggest hypocrite in history.
