Officials in International Falls are looking for someone interested in taking over the Kmart store after it closes in December.
Koochiching Economic Development Authority’s Paul Nevanan says they’ve done some research on potential retailer who might be able to fill the space.
Nevanan says market forces will still drive their decision.
“I think the most important thing for any retailers looking here is to make sure that they understand the Canadian market place. I mean when we draw that circle, it’s 25 to 40 miles north. It doesn’t stop at the border,” says Nevanen.
Nevanan says they did receive a couple of requests for proposals for firms looking to locate.
“We don’t check all the boxes but the fact that they’ve reached out to us and we’re on their radar, we’ll respond to those RFPs,” says Nevanen.
KEDA board member and Koochiching County chair Brian McBride says he’s also met recently with someone from Thunder Bay about possibly relocating to the region.
