For the second election in a row, Frances Kavanaugh from the Whitefish Bay First Nation has been elected grand chief of Grand Council Treaty #3.
He beat out Kathy Kishiqueb from Onigaming First Nation in a traditional vote of 57-46 held during the National Fall Assembly at Rat Portage.
Kavanaugh says it’s the third time he has been named grand chief.
“It’s quite an honour,” says Kavanaugh. “I say that because I have never asked anybody ‘will you nominate me, I want to run for grand chief’. I have never, ever done that. Even after I’m nominated, I don’t ask anybody, ‘will you go support me’”.
Kavanaugh says he will focus on justice issues, health care and better relationships with municipal governments.
