Improvements to how emergency personnel across northwestern Ontario communicate with each other.
Premier Doug Ford has announced $765 million for a new radio system for emergency service providers including police, paramedics and conservation officers.
“They’re out in God’s country and they can’t communicate with each other,” says Ford.
“You know we have an antiquated system for 20 years. You heard the previous government talk, talk, talk…but they didn’t do anything.”
Bell Mobility and Motorola have been given the contract to build the new emergency radio system.
It was last replaced in 1998. Officials say the current network is outdated and does not meet the North American standards for public safety radio established in 2001.
